    Gilead is getting away with this because HCV sufferers are stigmatized as doped up, inked up, locked up or screwed up in their youth. Many people think we somehow deserve this as punishment for past deviant behavior.
    So, the rich can easily pay $100,000. The poor qualify for all sorts of patient assistance programs. The people in the middle, they are always getting screwed. Gilead based its price on what the market would bear, not research or healthcare savings. Yes, I could have bought Harvoni, but I would have had to sell or refinance our home on the verge of retirement and work until I was 77. But if you are dead or your quality of life sucks, why worry about retirement.
    Imagine, Gilead comes up with a vaccine that will prevent breast cancer. It must be administered before age 10 to effective. They price the shot at $100,000, stating research costs and potential health care savings as justification.

    How long would that fly?
    The CEO would be drawn and quartered, probably within hours.
    The Board would be crucified.

    There have been two instances of detained meds that I am aware of. Both originated in India. Both were released. We need to stay on top of this. When the first package is not released, that will be a cause for some very public indignation. “Life Saving Generic Medications, Unaffordable in the U.S., Destroyed by the FDA”. I can see a media firestorm occuring if that happens.
    The main thing is that hundreds of shipments are sailing through and the detained ones have been released.

    The main point of the “letter” was to show that the importation of REDEMPTION meds into the U.S. has been examined and found to be acceptable by the FDA.

    Below is the actual story of a case in which a generics package was detained and eventually released by the FDA. I am aware of only two incidents where detention was an issue. Both packages were from India. Both were released.

    This is Mrsklg’s story from post #9105:

    I am in Michigan, I was suppose to get delivery 2 weeks ago yesterday, 1/8/16 , this was one response I got …

    Thank you for the information. I fully understand your situation, a serious medical condition and expensive treatment options. But, I must address your case in accordance to applicable U.S. laws and regulations.

    First, the imported medication is an unapproved foreign version of an U.S. approved medication. This foreign medication does not have an U.S. approved drug application and a valid drug listing.

    Secondly, there are no availability issues with the U.S. approved medication, other than its high cost.

    Lastly, the purported clinical trial, REDEMPTION-3, does not appear to be a viable clinical trial in the U.S., Europe, or Australia/New Zealand, according to the clinical trial registries.

    I sent that response to Andrew@fix hep c and he wrote them stating the Redemption trials was registered and sent them the link, within hours my FedEx package was released, and no response from them stating my package was released .. lol.. so it took exactly 2 weeks..
