Some thoughts:
We need to approach this from the “long view” standpoint.

1. Each shipment probably needs to be accompanied by a doctor’s prescription from the person recieving the medications.
2. Each package should include all MSDS documentation, clearly stating what is in the package.
3. The shipper needs to be someone who should be shipping such medications. Here we get into the “gray area”. This is where it will either fly or crash and burn. I don’t think Customs or the FDA is going to start the wholesale detention of life-saving medications being shipped to people who can’t afford to get them any other way. But, if we are talking about a huge number of shipments, who knows.
We can figure this out, but it needs careful thought and consideration before taking any action that could hurt our cause.
Those who can’t afford generic treatment should qualify for patient assistance.
The cost and logistics of a trip abroad is a big factor for many.
A lot to think about.

The U.S. Congress……
They will probably pass a Senate “resolution”, which means exactly nothing. Or they might set up a committee and recommend a bill. It will then go to the floor for debate and then go back to the committee. They will insert the recommendations from the debate into the bill and it will go back to the floor for a vote. If it passes, it will go to the House, where the process starts all over again. After they have made their changes and voted, it will go to conference committee to resolve the differences between the bills. Then both houses have to vote and pass it. Then it goes to the president’s desk…….
How many people will die?
Or will they wait until after the presidential election to consider some kind of reform?
The bureaucracy is a ponderous beast.
I don’t think we can count on much help from them in the foreseeable future.
We have to do this ourselves. Treatment will continue to be prioritized and people will be waiting for years. Market pressure is our best hope.

I think all patent applications should state the price the company is planning to charge before they are granted sole rights to manufacture a drug. If the price, like with Gilead and Sovaldi, is so extraordinarily high-I mean beyond all means of justification-then the company should be told to price it realistically or the drug will hit the open market. This precedent can not stand. Enough is enough. Investment bankers and hedge funds risk their clients money to bring in huge profits. Gilead is mortgaging peoples’ lives.
