I have picked up a toe nail fungus and oral medication has been recommended. I am now undetected and liver function is normal, Is it alright to take medications that are hard on the liver. What tests should I apply to making this decision?

The oral antifungals are all a bit toxic. That is because fungal cells are very like human cells and therefore very hard to target without some collateral damage.

That said, these drugs are generally safe and severe liver toxicity is very rare.

One option would be to try intensive topical treatment for a good 3 months plus and use oral treatment only if that fails

    YMMV

I have just started using a generic version of loceryl and I’m still alive. Can’t comment on its efficacy yet, apparently you have to apply it once a week for 6 to 12 months

Thanks. Are you taking the oral med? I don’t think the topical poses much problem for the liver, but have been warned that oral medication may. I am going to try a tea tree application to see if that can help before hitting the heavy artillery. I’ll keep you posted and thanks for the response.

Loceryl is a topical agent used once a week.

The application time depends on speed of nail growth.

What you expect to see is new health nail growing outwards. Once all the infected nail is gone (ie trimmed off) treat for a bit longer to be sure, but you can see it progressively growing out.

    YMMV

I’ve tried tea tree and various similar things including Chinese herbal medicine but none of then worked for me. :(

I’m not anti herbal but things like Loceryl are designed for, and fit for, purpose.

Tea tree oil has had great results with treating toe nail fungus. There are clinical trials on this. I too have toenail fungus and now that I’m cured of HCV I’m using tea tree oil.. Dab it on twice a day.. I’ve really reduced the area affected

I’m glad it’s working for you. I never had any luck with it but now I’m inspired to give it another go. Maybe now that my immune system is no longer overworked I’ll have more success.

I’ve tried the shot, but this stuff works.
It takes as long as it takes for the nails to grow, but, with once daily tx, you will never have those nice, thick, yellow nails again.
Once clear, keep treating before bedtime. The shit is insidious but it can’t stand the Nonyx.
The Kera makes them look nice until its gone.

I am a chiropodistodiatrist of over 15 years of experience and I have not found Loceryl (amorolfine) to work except for the mildest of surface infections. I have known people to persevere for years without success.
Terbinafine on the other hand invariable works although it might take 8-12 month, in rare cases 18 months. If your GP worries about liver damage he can order liver function tests.
