Good question DT,
My health coverage is through the state. Every state and public school employee is on this plan. It has over 70,000 members. If I get sick abroad, my insurance will cover me, but it will not cover medication if I travel abroad to get it. I forced them to cover 8 weeks of Harvoni under the external review provision of the Affordable Care Act after an 18 month battle. During this protracted process, I asked them to give me the medicine at 100% co pay. That would have been nothing out of their pocket and $39,000 out of mine. Their answer: "We don't negotiate."
If overall infection percentages are applied to my group, around 700 have HCV. At $58,000 for a 12 week treatment (their price), it would cost $40,600,000. If they paid airfare, medical and medicine costs to send us to Australia, it would cost around $2.8 million to cure us all. This makes no sense.
