Please note that although the standard dose of Ribavirin is 1000 mg daily for patients < 75 kg and 1200 mg daily for patients > 75 kg given as 2 divided doses this must be reduced if your kidney function is lower than usual.

Ribavirin is given in 2 divided doses – one in the morning, one at night. Because it comes in 200 mg capsules it looks like this:

    < 75 kg - take 2 x 200 mg in the morning, 3 x 200 mg in the evening (or 3 in the morning and 2 at night) > 75 kg – take 3 x 200 mg in the morning, 3 x 200 mg in the evening (or 3 twice a day)

Kidney function is measured by Creatinine and eGFR

With good kidney function your Creatinine is low and your eGFR is high (> 60)

With poor kidney function your Creatinine is high and your eGFR is low (<60)

eGFR is estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate

A Glomerulus is on of the millions of little blood filters in your kidneys.

The required Ribavirin dose reduction in renal failure is discussed in this article:

    Hi Everyone

600mg seems a little light on Price, how is her health compromised? Some people tolerate Riba well and others not. I was 70kg back in 2008 and was overdosing up to 1400 mg daily. This being once I discovered I was on a dodgy trial arm which had been only giving me 90mg of IFN in the first 12 weeks. Didn’t help at that point I should have ceased all meds at that point. Hit it hard and hit it fast and get it out quick was the catch cry back then with those drugs. I’m seriously thinking I will lead out with riba and can access on a script from our Sydney friend. Em

This could be appropriate (with some renal failure) but is not enough for somebody with normal renal function.

What is there Creatinine and eGFR. Low platelets, low body weight, prior intolerance of full dose and other factors may be why.

Then again it could just be a mistake about the usual dose….

If you dose he Riba so it drops hemoglobin by 3 grams that’s supposed to give you a good blood level of Riba.
