    Hello,

Can I ask please, does anyone have any experience with sweat smelling like ammonia or know of why this happens?

    Son has it.
He is drinking lots of water around 4-5ltrs a day.
    Healthy diet.
    Exercises regularly.

I wondered if it were the generic Harvoni side effect?

    Or something else?

    Thank you so much!

Should add he is fine otherwise, works out hard, studying hard, etc.

I can’t really smell it on him, maybe a faint smell but nothing bad.

It’s preventing him from going out though.

Good thing is his extremities acne/spots/rash is almost gone, those got angry red when he worked out.

He looks really well. Good colour, weight stable, eating well.

    Hi,
I have always worked out and have noticed the ammonia smell after particularly strenuous ones. I have also smelled it on others after running long distances. I am no doctor, but I think this is normal.

Do you smell ammonia after a workout? Here is why

D…that article by Mike is very informative. Not to instill FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt),
but my mom passed from liver disease with a strong odor of ammonia plus she was
diabetic #1. Ammonia is a byproduct of liver issues.

I’m sure your son is fine, but have it checked out. Maybe Dr F could shed some more
    light on it.

Good to hear your son is doing great. The odds are way in your favor that everything
is good and will be good in the future….e.

We do see high levels of ammonia in liver failure:

    http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/tc/cirrhosis-complications-encephalopathy-topic-overview

But we all have some ammonia from the metabolism of protein so I would pay more attention to the liver function tests than sweaty smells and also know that the best thing for Hep C liver issues is DAA medication to get rid of the root cause.

    YMMV

It means he’s burning amino acids for energy because he’s not eating enough carbohydrates. Have him eat some high glycemic carbs before working out, like an apple, or grain bread or oatmeal and drink sports drinks during exercise (like Gatorade, etc) that his body can use as a quick source of energy .and I bet you he gets rid of the smell.

My mother passed away from the same and she also had the smell ….caused by a long history of alcohol use.

But her son is a young kid who works out and hopefully they’ll never have to go through what we went through. I mean, that’s why we’re here helping, right?

I’m sorry ur family suffered. :-(

My son was an alcoholic for about 5 years. Stopped last year. Not a drop! :-) no recreational drugs either.
His blood work looks good and he’s working out, eating well and drinking loads of water.

Thank u for sharing and helping!!

I’m so glad your son stopped drinking, I can imagine how hard that must’ve been for you when he was an alcoholic, he sounds like he’s well on the way to a wonderful healthy changed life.

Get him on the apples & sports drinks.

He’s lucky to have a lovely caring, loving mum like you. :)

    Love Cindi x
