Jonathon,
The only way to know whether or not one has Hep C is through a blood test. One can certainly become infected through coming into contact with HCV infected blood. Basically the Hepatitis C virus must be able to enter ones bloodstream in order for one to become infected.
An opening in the skin like a popped pimple is one way the virus (if present) could possibly enter the bloodstream. It normally isn’t likely that one would get Hep C from a hospital gown. However if the robe is contaminated with HCV infected blood products, and someone wearing that robe has a cut or an open lesion, the opportunity for an infection to occur certainly exists.
There are 1,000+ ways one can come into contact with Hep C. Some of the obvious ways are needle sticks, and medical ignorance, errors, or negligence (i.e. giving patients a dirty robe). I suspect these occurrences represent only a fraction of new infections though.
Anyone who has had a haircut with non-sterile implements, been cut by a barbers non-sterile razor, used someone else’s razor, has had a manicure or pedicure with non-sterile instruments, had a tattoo with non-sterile instruments, has had dental work done with non-sterile instruments, inadvertently used someone else’s toothbrush, been in a schoolyard fight, given or received a ‘snotty’, applied a bandage to a friends cut, the list goes on and on – is at risk for infection. So, unless they have grown up in a sterile bubble, virtually everyone has been at risk of infection with Hep C at one time or another in their lifetimes.
The fact that some of us get it and others don’t is really just the luck of the draw.
Any of us at any time can become infected, or re-infected.
Most people have no idea they’re infected until a blood test reveals HCV infection, or abnormalities which lead to further testing (this is how I learned I was infected).
No one understands your concerns better than those of us who have been infected with Hep C. My best advice is to talk to your GP and get a blood test. There is literally no other way to know.
Note: I am not a physician, and this is not the opinion of a physician. I am a former Hep C patient who became infected through unknown means.
Welcome aboard Sumblues. I can relate to the ‘seems too good to be true’. Seemed that way to me too until my first post treatment blood tests. When the Hep C by PCR quantitative analysis went from millions to thirty five, 4 weeks into treatment, and AST/ALT levels went from astronomical to normal – I was in disbelief.
Felt the same way when I finally got the end of treatment (EOT) +12 week labs. After decades of living with Gen 1a Hepatitis C, I had to look at the result over and over again for it to sink in.
This is real – believe it.
I look forward to your treatment blog!
Fitz
Thank you Meg. Congratulations to you as well on slaying the dragon!
Ariel – you’re one hell of a awesome mother. World class. Our thoughts prayers are with you my friend.
Coral,
Sincere condolences on your father’s passing. I’m so glad that you had the opportunity to celebrate your Undetected result with him.
Congratulations on reaching the halfway point in your treatment.
Good vibes, and support going your way!
Fitz
Martin Shkreli (former Turing CEO) is the lowest form of life on this planet. He goes on trial next year in the US for fraud – but really it is for what he did to AIDS sufferers.
It is absolutely obscene that international intellectual property laws allow scum like Shkreli to abuse the sickest and most defenseless among us in this manner.
We’re on the same page, brother.

I think its fair to say we have differing world views. We live in different countries, in different hemispheres, on opposite corners of the world…
When I discovered that I had been refused a prescription for Harvoni by my insurer, you were literally my savior You intervened with an international prescription, honored by Monkmed in India, and my life was once again – for the first time since I learned of my diagnosis, over 20 years ago – my own.
Now, after 3 months of generic DAA therapy, and three additional months of waiting for my SVR12 result, my life is truly once and for all, really my own.
Wow.You came through Doc! Honest to God, gangbusters! You saved my life.
Please – resist the temptation to take sides, to engage in politics. Regardless of personal feelings for or against the politics of the moment, or the day, or the decade – you, your movement, our movement – to eradicate Hep C worldwide, transcends all.
I’m an American, a Libertarian, formerly with Hep C. I have been cured, thanks to you, Monkmed, and the REDEMPTION 3 Trials.
What I know from ground level is this – the folks who against all predictions voted the incoming administration into power are precisely the folks we need to reach: Working class, rust belt, flyover territory Americans who live in the vast territory between the East Coast, and West Coast.
The official statistic for Americans with Hep C is 3.5 million. The actual numbers are probably far beyond that. Most (like me) are in that rust belt, “flyover” country between the coasts.
We need your support and counsel now more than ever.
Having followed your journey Ariel – wow! You are one tough chick!
Two courses of torturous Peg/Intf
therapy. That is absolute hell on earth.Having the guts to stand up to that pain, and then to go on to find the resources to beat this disease, you are nothing short of amazing!
You’ll get through this rough patch as well, Mermaid.
Love and support.
Fitz
Thanks my Viking brother. Looks as if you are about ~3 weeks out from your own EOT +12 labs. I see an SVR12 result coming up for you, Sven.

From Bloomberg: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-01/trump-may-be-more-vicious-on-drug-prices-allergan-ceo-says
And there’s this from The Hill: http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/267005-trump-calls-for-medicare-to-negotiate-drug-prices
So, who knows….
Thank you Coral!
Looks like you are close to three months into re-treatment yourself now, and I’m sending prayers good vibes your way. I just know you’ll whip it!
After learning through a message from my specialist last week that SVR12 and a cure had been confirmed, I just received the official test results by email this morning. Somehow seeing the results in black and white still seems a bit surreal, but there they are – 12 weeks after EOT, no HCV.
Honestly, after failing to clear once (Interferon), I was skeptical that I could be healed. Seeing is believing.
Test result: 21 November, 2016
At this point, (one man’s non-medical layman’s opinion) I would advise against trying the stuff (Ademetionine) while on DAA therapy since we don’t know about possible interactions with DAAs.
I’m sure Dr. Freeman will be along with some actual medical guidance on this.
ETA: Here’s a link to an interesting article on SAMe : http://www.journal-of-hepatology.eu/article/S0168-8278(12)00409-6/fulltext
MtGoat, Sven, Hieu, Mike, thank you my friends.
Sven – very stoked for you brother! You’ve got this, I know it.

Thanks for the thoughtful caution and information, Tommy.
Honestly, I’m not one who believes everything I read on the internet. On the other hand, I believe that contempt prior to investigation is bad policy (for me).
SAMe looks like it is genuinely worth investigating.
When I learned about Chlorcyclizine, I researched that as well. I’ve got a two month supply (unused) sitting in the original shipping box in the closet. Going a bit off topic here – at my own risk I gave it a try for a week.
Like Ademetionine, Chlorcyclizine is available OTC here in the US. Turns out Chlorcyclizine is very strong stuff, and I decided at the end of one weeks personal trial, the drowziness and horrible aftertaste were more than I was willing to put up with – especially since I was already well into a 12 week course of generic Sof/Led therapy.
Did the week on Chlorcyclizine help? I really don’t know. Probably not, but maybe? I do know that after 12 weeks of generic Sof/Led therapy I am officially “cured”.
Having lost entire joints to Hep C, and having borne the associated expenses, the $36 a month for 800+ mg of SAMe doesn’t seem all that expensive. So, I’ll look into it
