“If voting made any difference they wouldn’t let us do it.”
― Mark TwainI have to disagree with such populist cynicism. In fact I’d say it panders to those who would attempt to thwart change!
The VA administration was exposed as not looking after the veterans with HCV. The bad press that was generated meant they had to do something and they have to the tune of $1.5 billion……which isn’t enough so they attempted to use smoke and mirrors in the hope that those who embarrassed them previously will leave them in peace.
Unlike MT, Price and her colleagues aren’t fooled or disheartened and are continuing the fight. As she says, the veterans need your support and comments about generics.

Thanks Ariel, useful to know there is a local lab with that capability in case I need it for any ‘confidence’ tests after EOT. It is a superb day, but have to drag myself up to Prahran in an hour for tests myself. It seemed like a good choice of clinic when I worked up that way……still is but the long hike is a nuisance.

Ariel,
Looking forward to hearing the results of your latest tests. Do they include VL or just LFT and others?

Hi zhuk & Chejai,
Gt3 often presents as a bit more aggressive and difficult to treat than the other genotypes even if initial RVR is similar. The usual recommendation is to extend the treatment somewhat which seems to bring the success rate up to something similar to the other strains.
I’m also sorry to hear of your issues during treatment Chejai, I don’t think they can just be put down to sides so would advocate getting things like the headaches checked. Some may be pre-existing conditions that won’t resolve with EOT but many could well still be HCV related and just take longer to heal. After all, while these new medications are miraculous it is a lot to expect 35 years of your body fighting the virus to just be cured in 10 or even 24 weeks. Some symtoms may take much longer to go away or fade and so require watchful patience.

Hi LG,
In simple terms Daclatasvir is metabolised in the body by the CYP3a4 enzyme, as are many other drugs. How well CYP3a4 metabolises drugs like Dac is effected by other drugs and foods we eat and drink. if something causes it to metabolise the Dac quicker like Taurine then it is an inducer and we don’t get the full dose and if it makes it less effective like Grapefruit or in this case Grapes then it is an inhibitor and we get too large a dose of Dac and more sides.

On the other hand Ledipasvir isn’t metabolised by CYP3a4 but has absorption issues depending on acidity levels in the stomach.

Okay, the squirrel species is Trogopterus xanthipes Milne-Edwards.
There has been some science done on its droppings though I couldn’t find any references to the liver.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3450127
So not as off the wall as it sounds although I suspect TGA approval would be either an extract or synthesis of one of the chemicals present (possibly isopimarane diterpene?) rather that the squirrel poop itself. ick:' />

Now, the following is just anecdotal with no science behind it, probably as much about moderation as CYP3a4 inhibitors:
About 3-4 weeks ago my sides seem to be increasing somewhat, nothing real bad but I just wasn’t feeling that great any more, nothing I could really put a finger on, just a little bleah! Then 2 weeks ago I was reading one of Greg’s posts on his blog and he included Grapes in the list of items that were potential CYP3a4 inhibitors that should be avoided when on Daclatasvir. My first thought was “nup, grape seed oil is an inhibitor but not grapes”. A very quick google confirmed that I was correct so I grabbed another handful of grapes out of the fruit bowl. Hey, it’s grape season and they’re $3-4 a kilo and I like grapes so there is always a bunch in the bowl and I graze as I walk past throughout the day, probably 5-6 times a day, at least 1/4 to 1/3 kg a day!!! Ohh…..wait! Maybe time for some more research? Well I still couldn’t find anything specific but grape seeds used to make the oil come from grapes and grape skins contain resveratrol which has some effects as a 3a4 inactivator http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11125847.
Anyway, nothing definite but I decided that this year I could probably live without gorging myself on grapes. The slightly toxic effects I was feeling seem to have gone now too. Maybe it was related, maybe it wasn’t? Maybe I was just eating too many grapes? I don’t know but thought I would include here just in case others were eating a lot of grapes and had sides.
And on the moderation thing, I suggest you do as I say rather than follow what I do!
