Sabrecat, it is easy to scare people when you have a few cases of an illness we’re not familiar with. So when we had the cases of H1N1 we lost most of the patients. The few that were saved were put on lung machines. So people panicked and Roche made billions selling Tamiflu . In the UK people were able to buy it without prescription.

Reports later showed that Tamiflu doesn’t do much. It shortens the flu symptoms by 16 hours and doesn’t prevent complications like pneumonia or hospitalizations.

Tamiflu is part of a group of anti-influenza drugs called neuraminidase inhibitors, which work by blocking a viral enzyme that helps the influenza virus to invade cells in your respiratory tract. The problem is that your nervous system also contains neuraminidase enzymes essential for proper brain functioning, and when blocked with these drugs, severe neurotoxicity may ensue (especially in the infants and children whose blood-brain barrier has not yet developed sufficiently).

The side effects included seizures, suicidal behavior, hallucinations, delirium, and other behavioral side effects (such as reports of children jumping off roofs shortly after taking the drug), which, of course, had not been reported by the drug company.

So the risk, by far outweighs the possible benefit yet the CDC put Tamiflu on the list of recommended meds and our governments wasted billions to stockpile it .

Meri, do you have a history of heart problems or kidney problems?

When you see your doctor remind him that Harvoni can cause heart problems in rare cases.

Reducing 10 lbs is one of the strategies we used with the old interferon treatment because it reduced insulin resistance and that increased SVR…sometimes.

    Fitz:

There are many things that can cause joint problems.Let me count the ways
    1. Cirrhosis can cause osteoporosis.
    2. HCV can cause a type of arthritis that resembles rheumatoid arthritis.
    3. HCV causes insulin resistance. Insulin resistance causes the excretion of magnesium and calcium in the urine..
Osteoporosis is another potential problem resulting from insulin resistance. Insulin is a master hormone which controls many anabolic hormones such as growth hormone, testosterone, and progesterone. In insulin resistance, the anabolic process is reduced. Bone is built upon the command of such hormones. When these hormones are reduced, the amount of bone building is reduced, and the amount of calcium excreted is increased.
    4. The hyperinsulinemia (high insulin levels) caused by insulin resistancre prevents the absorption of calcium which causes osteoporosis..
    5. Low Vitamin D which many of you have. In order for calcium to be utilized, vitamin D must also be present in adequate amounts.
    6. HCV can cause diabetes….which causes calcium to be lost in the urine.
    7. Diet deficient in protein, and high in carbs which can lead to insulin resistance.
    8. Chronic inflammation
    9. Obesity…because it causes insulin resistance.
    10. Patients with degenerative and age-related diseases generally display a low antioxidant status. Imbalances in the cellular levels of prooxidants and antioxidants induces oxidative stress, which is a contributor to the etiology of various degenerative diseases.
    11. Medications that can cause insulin resistance.

    and more

My GP didn’t tell me anything about HCV because he didn’t know and didn’t care to find out, so I took myself to the liver clinic at RPA.

I once had a patient tell me that his doctor told him hep c was like a mouse that was eating cheese.

Patient education is very important. If you explain to patients how important it is that they take their pills and what could happen if they don’t plus give them ideas as to what they can do to prevent missing doses, they do quite well.

Also having a specific person be in charge of returning phone calls and making it a rule that all phone calls will be returned the same day really helps, and having someone that actually enjoys working with hep c patients can make a big difference. Patients will feel like they can talk to them.

Last but not least, having a support group moderated by someone familiar with treatment also helps because patients can ask questions.

The problem with the lower level of detection of 250 is that when you clear the virus the result will say <250, same as what you have now.

That is interesting. HCV kills more than HIV, TB and malaria yet HCV is not in the millenium goals but the others are.

In the same way, VA are not really the problem. They are working with a government provided budget of X dollars to fund treatment for Y patients and are doing so with courses of medication that while not perfect are an unachievable dream for many in the US and the rest of the world.

One of their options is Sof + Peg + Riba. Any options that include Ribavirin the dose is 600mg and increase by 200mg every 2 weeks. It’s not a dream, it’s a nightmare.

They asked Congress for less money for treatment this year.
