Nothing on the Hepatitis Foundation of NZ’s site about it

Sovaldi is a new drug which has had very high cure rates during clinical studies. It is used for treating genotypes 1, 2, 3 and 4, in combination with pegylated interferon and/or ribavirin. It is expected to be funded in New Zealand in two to three years.

    http://www.hepatitisfoundation.org.nz/index.php/hepc/treatment/

And Harvoni is available, just not on their version of the PBS (PHARMAC), according to the site’s FAQ. If there is a source suggesting otherwise, definitely post it up!

Do you know when is Pharmac likely to look into funding the latest treatments such as Harvoni or Sovaldi? Also, I noticed some European countries like France and Germany have negotiated discounted prices with Gilead, is the NZ government likely to follow France and Germany initiative in the near future and start looking at making a deal with Gilead ?
Unfortunately we cannot comment on when PHARMAC will make a decision about funding these new hepatitis C drugs as we are not privy to this information, nor can we sway the outcome. We are not involved in the PHARMAC decision-making process.

What is the cost of Harvoni?
The approximate cost of Harvoni is NZ$26,000 (excl. GST) for a bottle of 28 tablets, which is a one month supply. This may vary as different pharmacies may charge different costs. Harvoni treatment varies between 8 weeks and 24 weeks, so it could cost between NZ$52,000 (excl. GST) to NZ$156,000 (excl. GST).

Is Harvoni available in New Zealand?
Yes, Harvoni, a combination of sofosbuvir and ledipasvir, has been approved by New Zealand’s Medsafe, which means it is available in New Zealand. It is not funded by PHARMAC so users will have to pay for Harvoni.

Definitely not dreaming now, Joy :)

Hey call me thick if you like lol, but its only with the prospect of a cure that I’ve realised how much I’ve avoided considering a long-term future before…aws none of us could say for sure whether we would have one. This must have a pretty profound impact once you think about it, huh.

Thanks Joy! Ha I know…I’ve already gone and checked up on them a couple of times, just to kill the “Dreaming? No I’m not dreaming” feeling :P lol

Seeing one of the RPA nurses tomorrow, get the pre-tx bloods taken go over my other medications re contraindications etc. I have also been taking milk thistle for some years, so probably better to allow a bit of breathing space on that before treatment as well. All good :)

    Hey Chejai,

Damn, what a runaround…I don’t blame you it must be exhausting and bloody frustrating, on top of everything else you have to cope with. It wouldn’t surprise me either if your GP has been “warned off”, esp if Brisbane specialists are the type of ‘old boys club’ which Greg Jeffreys has described :pinch:

Can you organise the blood tests to work out a Hepascore, as Dr J has suggested? Might be a viable replacement for the fibroscan, then you could go straight to GP2U and cut out all these refractory middlemen?

    http://fixhepc.com/forum/experts-corner/362-fibroscans-vs-hepascores.html

See how your GP responds, it shouldn’t be too difficult just to get bloods for that (fingers crossed)

Thanks for all the well-wishes mate :) Dr James has posted the Redemption trial timeslines as Jan > March, so I’m attempting to be patient until then heh.

    Ha, very selective lol

Well I guess that says much! All the more specifically pertinent information for overseas sufferers then heh

But she did leave the site url standing, so people who are curious can have a look…that’s a positive anyway :)

    Hey IRMA,

Not being a medical professional I’m ready to stand corrected, but from D J’s link it looks to me like none of these tests (bilirubin, GGT, α2-macroglobulin, and hyaluronic acid) should have any issue being requested by a GP. However I am not sure who would be required to do the computations of those results to obtain the actual hepascore. Maybe the doc or someone else can shed a bit of light on that.

Cheers, 2b…I’ve registered and given it a shot. Let’s see how it goes…and in case it gets moderated out of existence before seeing the light of day lol

Hi to gary and to all here.

Just by way of further explanation about FixHepC and the aussie Buyer’s club, see the site for more detailed info https://fixhepc.com

And yes, not only Australians but those who have been refused insurance cover in the US have obtained meds with the club’s assistance, as well as UK patients ineligible under their NHS-triaged system. Anyone is free to visit the site and find out what they can do to access their treatment legally.

Talking locally, since the new DAA’s have not been approved for use in Australia, the only way for hep C sufferers to access them here is via importation of generics – and these are most definitely not under any kind of agreement with Gilead. Our Govt has been in financial wrangling with the company for many months now, and there is still nothing on the horizon..unless you can pay over $A100,000. Hence the mutual club set up by a most compassionate Tasmanian GP Dr James Freeman, who has been helping hundreds of people to get well. The rationale is “treat everyone, everywhere”…why should people’s lives hang in the balance, with their survival decided by a hugely wealthy pharmaceutical company, is the question to be asked.

Hey Cassidy welcome to the forum

What Chapel & crazy8 said – you have a couple of choices re generic treatment. US members here have imported successfully (though as pointed out this may have recently become more complicated) or you can take a brief trip down under. Many of us have been living with the virus for decades so there’s time to sort out your options. Check out the posts here and feel free to ask questions. Best of luck.
