    @mgalbrai

This appears to be the situation in the U.S. at the moment:

    1. Customs is not interested in detaining medications, especially doctor prescribed, life-saving medication that is unaffordable in the U.S.
    2. FedEx basically preclears everything shipped using their service before it leaves the origin country. If it doesn’t clear,it goes back to the shipper. The shipper can then refund the buyer. Other shippers probably do the same.
    3. The FDA doesn’t appear to be willing to intercede either at this point concerning these particular medications. Both Customs and the FDA are part of the executive branch. Right now, it looks like their next boss will probably be Hillary Clinton, who has gone on record as saying she intends to deal with pharmaceutical price gouging.
    4. The Republicans are against more government regulation and interference in peoples’ lives.
    5. The Democrats believe in accessible, affordable health care for all.

I think if medicine were being detained at the border, we would be hearing about it. If a person has their meds detained, I think a letter from their doctor and a prescription would quickly get them undetained. Gilead is not very popular anywhere right now. Their money spends, but it is viewed as “blood money” by many in power.

The pipeline is open. We need to start using it. If someone tries to shut it down, we all need to scream bloody murder.

Insurance companies like to save money, but are so damn structured they can’t even imagine there is a box to think out of.
As far as pleasing customers. They consider the importance customer satisfaction like I rate the enjoyability of prostate exams-not very high

    You are right V,
We just need someone that will ship to the U.S. This would provide access to a large number of people who simply don’t have the time or money to travel halfway around the world. If U.S. Customs detains a package, they have to notify you and give you 30 days to get it “undetained”. The amount of hell I could raise in 30 days……..
The head of Customs would be begging me to take it off their hands and shut up…

    Welcome AA!
While you will get tons of support and understanding here, the main thing you will get is well. Cured. Free of this crap. This is where the keys are to release us from our HCV prison.

    Hi All,
There seems to be quite a bit of uncertainty about shipping, Customs clearance and people losing their money and cure due to importation regulations. Maybe we need to ship a few “test” packages of something that is not costly to see what can enter where and what and where it can’t.
    Just a thought…

Doesn’t Gilead legally call Ireland its “tax home”? If so, that could explain a few of the import policies there.

It seems that in the U.S., at the moment, personal shipments of medications, especially live-saving medications, that are unavailable or UNAFFORDABLE, ARE GETTING THROUGH! If anyone knows of an instance where these meds were detained by Customs, please post. I think Customs is letting these through. The problem has been getting people to ship to the U.S. I don’t think that Customs would refuse to release the drugs if someone challenged the detention in a loud and public manner.
    This may change.

    Good question DT,
My health coverage is through the state. Every state and public school employee is on this plan. It has over 70,000 members. If I get sick abroad, my insurance will cover me, but it will not cover medication if I travel abroad to get it. I forced them to cover 8 weeks of Harvoni under the external review provision of the Affordable Care Act after an 18 month battle. During this protracted process, I asked them to give me the medicine at 100% co pay. That would have been nothing out of their pocket and $39,000 out of mine. Their answer: “We don’t negotiate.”
If overall infection percentages are applied to my group, around 700 have HCV. At $58,000 for a 12 week treatment (their price), it would cost $40,600,000. If they paid airfare, medical and medicine costs to send us to Australia, it would cost around $2.8 million to cure us all. This makes no sense.

I agree with Chester, but feel the symbolic message being sent to the government that allows and protects Gilead’s obscene pricing is paramount. If pressure and media coverage can force Gilead to lower its prices by, oh, say 99.8%, ridding the world of HCV will be far easier.
