    Hi folks,

It is indeed a concern if it is really true that DHL and Fedex have decided to stop shipping life-saving medicines out of India…

Let’s not forget that Gilead have signed voluntary contracts only with a number of generic manufacturers in India (probably the contract has been posted on FixHepC before, but here is a link to the KEI page where anyone interested can find the actual text: http://keionline.org/node/2082). Gilead do not have a contract with the Indian government or with the Indian Board of Excise and Customs. Gilead do not hold a patent for Sofosbuvir in India because the Indian Patent Office basically told Gilead to get lost and not come back until they could come up with some genuinely novel molecules. So any company in India that wants to do so can legally manufacture and distribute Sofosbuvir as long as it complies with the usual national health and safety regulations … and NOT with any murderous restrictions that Gilead might have slipped into its contract.

As far as I can see, Gilead should have absolutely no say in what Indian Customs Services might decide to do or not do. That is a matter for the Indian Government and for the Indian Government alone.

    So I have two questions.

    1. Have DHL and Fedex stopped shipping ALL medications out of India, or have they suddenly become “selective” and have they decided to stop only hepatitis C medications?

    2. Who owns DHL and Fedex anyway? Obviously, they are american companies… But who do their bosses play golf with?

    Hi Re-roll,

You’re right, I didn’t post exact numbers for the booze. On a beer-day, it is typically 3 small beers (3×1.3 = 4 UK units) or 1/2 bottle of wine (4.5 units). On a non-beer day it is 0 or 1 small beer (yes, I know!…;). I have had several party-nights, maybe about one every three weeks recently where we go out or have people in. Always a lot of empty wine bottles afterwards! But always spread over the whole evening, and always with lots of food. These days, I am very aware that after such evenings I am in amazingly good shape the next morning, compared a year ago I would have been wiped out the next day (in fact, a year ago, I only ever had a glass or two at parties because I knew that otherwise I would pay for it afterwards…;).

Putting it all together, I am probably drinking at least something on 5 or 6 days out of 7, and averaging about 25-28 units per week. I believe most doctors in the UK recommend not to regularly exceed 28 units/week. So I think am within “safe” limits.

Anyway, at first, I put all my figures in a table just for myself because it helps to show up any trends. And then, why not just put them all on-line? Many of us put the key numbers in our signatures anyway…

Maybe now we take it for granted that many people will get to <15 or UND at 4 weeks. But what really surprised me was that while 6 months off the booze last year brought down the GGT by about 15 points to 50 (almost touching "normal"), just 3 months of Sof+Dac(+Booze) dropped the GGT by an additional 20 points down to 30.

In the FAQ (http://fixhepc.com/kunena-2015-11-10/faq.html), it says that "GGT will probably remain elevated if you are drinking during treatment, but that's the booze not the bug."

In my own little experiment (n=1), it certainly looks like its the bug, not the booze…

    Anyway, here’s to sensible drinking…

    Cheers,

    Hi Folks,

It seems like a lot of people are getting worried about that remark from Prof Gane about the *possibility* of relapsing with certain generics.

Dr James has verified by NMR that all the generics sourced by the FixHepC Buyers Club and that the generics manufactured by the companies recommended on the FixHepC web Forum are chemically equivalent to the patented molecules:

    http://fixhepc.com/blog/item/16-testing-provisions-patient-safety.html

This means that apart from a few minor (and probably irrelevant) arguments about solubility and kinetics, Dr James has done everything humanly possible to show the generics that we all are taking may be assumed to be bio-equivalent to the patented molecules.

As several other people on this thread have already pointed out (mgalbrai, Price, Sirchinenge, GAJ, …;), you just need to look at our forum signatures to see that the FixHepC generics are working extremely well. This is overwhelming evidence that there is no difference between the FixHepC generics and the patented molecules. The NMR spectra say we are taking the correct molecules. All the results posted so far say we are taking the correct molecules. So do not worry, do not fret! Molecules do not know about nationality or packaging. All the evidence so far says that the molecules made in China, India, and Bangladesh are the same molecules as the molecules made for Gilead in Ireland.

Here are some results posted previously by Dr James from previous trials using molecules made in the USA or Europe:

    http://fixhepc.com/forum/questions-and-answers/644-query-8-week-protocol.html?start=6#9804

Probably a lawyer would say that NMR doesn’t prove bio-equivalence… The final proof will be the results from the REDEMPTION trials. I am sure that once the results are in they will show comparable or better statistics. Probably better because REDEMPTION will be the biggest trial ever.

Personally, I am already absolutely convinced that the generics I have been on are bio-equivalent. But I am a chemist, not a lawyer. REDEMPTION will provide the ultimate proof.

So for what its worth, my advice about the risk of relapse is this – DON’T WORRY, IT WILL PROBABLY NEVER HAPPEN.

But even if the worst does happen, it will be just bad luck and nothing to do with which little country (joke) you got your treatment from.

    Yours,

    Oor Wullie

    Thanks Mike,

But why are CBS going after Schinazi so hard?

Because he once worked for the VA?

Or is it because he made $400M when Pharmasset was sold to Gilead for $7Bn? If Schinazi got $400M out of the deal, it makes him only a 5% share-holder in Pharmasset. Scarcely a position of power, and certainly not in a position where he have any say in the matter. After all, it is Gilead who are doing all the price-gouging … to the tune of $21Bn per year on Sovaldi alone…

At first sight, it seems to me like CBS are missing the real culprit… What are they afraid of?

On the other hand, maybe the fact the Schinazi worked for the VA is ultimately the best way to attack patent and pricing issues. If Schinazi worked for the VA, then the VA should get a fair percentage of the rights to any intellectual property (IP) he generates.

In the UK and most of europe, it is quite normal for a university researcher to be obliged to hand over to his employer ALL the intellectual property that he might produce – usually in return for a gratuity of 30% (say) of any eventual commercial success that might arise.

In the UK at least, if Schinazi was also working for an outside company (i.e. Pharmasset), he should have declared this to his employer (i.e. the VA), and cut a deal. And if he didn’t, he was most probably in breach of his contract with the VA. Either way, on this basis, the VA should have a rightful claim on a good percentage on Schinazi’s IP. In short, the VA should own most of the rights to Sofosbuvir, and could potentially file a massive claim against Gilead…

    Go VA!!

Gilead has just posted Q4 sales for 2015.

    http://investors.gilead.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=69964&p=irol-earnings

    * Total sales in Q4 2015: $8.4 billion (up from $7.2 billion in Q4 2014), of which antivirals account for $7.9 billion.

    * Total sales for 2015: $32.2 billion (up from $24.5 billion in 2014), primarily from Sovaldi at $21.2 billion, compared to $18.1 billion in 2014.
