Interesting! Seems like a kind of “compulsory licence” for the USA? But I could not access the original article. For anyone who wants to follow up further, here is a link:

Hi Hazel, I completely agree. This is the most insidious part of the TPP. It aims to give “investors” (in practice, that means american corporations) the power to challenge and over-rule policies that have been set constitutionally by the participating state governments (in practice, that means non-american governments). What government in their right mind would ever agree to a deal like that?

There have already been some efforts behind the scenes to make some “official” translations of the most important sections of the FixHepC web site (French, Vietnamese, … and maybe others?). Maybe they will eventually appear one day?

But the info on the english version (especially the blog) is evolving very rapidly and it is hard for the translators to keep up. Also, as far as I can see, there may be a technical question of how to integrate different language versions with the main forum?

The automatic language translation feature (menu at top left of page) is probably good enough to let most non-english speakers get the gist, but it would obviously be better if there was a top level language version for each of the main world languages, and a language-specific web address for each…

Anyway, if anyone is really motivated to do some serious translation, they should contact Dr James (help@fixhepc.com) with any suggestions or ideas.

Cheers, Ciao, Hasta luego, À plus,

    Vororo

Thanks Gaj for the nice explanation and graphic.

Thanks Londongirl, also. There is probably a good evolutionary reason for our fear of dentists

But the thing that still bothers me is how it was transmitted before battle-axes, syringes, and dentists were invented?

Current medical opinion says it was not by insect bites, even though insects are the main vector for the other flaviviruses (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaviviridae).

    … Dog-bites?

Good deduction there Mike, so how did the various genotypes come about? Just asking cause that area always confuses me. :)

Yeah, no doubt technology and bloody wars contributed a lot to the spread. But the fact that there are 6 genotypes or more must mean that the virus has been in the human population for a very long time.

Until modern medicine came along, human life expectancy was only about 30 years. So back in ancient times the chances are pretty high that anyone with the virus would die of something else long before it would cause any problems…

Just to add my own two-cents,

I have the feeling (from my own experience anyway), that many Drs are unwilling to actively support the use of overseas generics, but once they know that you are taking them, they will support you as far as monitoring is concerned. This is their duty of care, after all. And they will be (or should be) very reassured to know that your generic treatment is sourced from a reputable source such as FixHepC or MonkMed.

And once they see from the first blood tests that the stuff really works as advertised, they will open up and start telling you how wonderful the new generics are.

Again from my own experience, my specialist was at first absolutely astonished that I had flown to Australia to get the treatment. But when I showed him a copy of the prescription from Dr Freeman he was quite satisfied that all was well.

Twelve weeks later, and UND, he told me that I had done absolutely the right thing, and he even seemed apologetic that he had to follow national guidelines and was thereforepowerless to prescribe himself… Still, he told me that if he ever has another patient like me he will keep FixHepC in mind.

So at least as far as Hep-C and generics are concerned, my advice to anyone who might be reading this is not to wait for permission from your own Dr, but just take the initiative yourself and go for it through the Buyers Club!

    Hi Folks,

I must say, I would doubt very much that anyone is being hacked by “BigPharma” just because they are posting on FixHepC or any other Hep-C forum. If that was really happening, and if it ever came out, the negative publicity would be enormous. A bit like tapping Princess Diana’s phone calls. As a business model, I am sure their best strategy is to continue to talk as if generics and buyers clubs do not exist.

But the reality is that these days, as soon as you post an e-mail address on-line, you will be subject to all manner of probes by automatic software. A lot of this is not real “mal-ware”. It is just search engines trying to collect up-to-date mailing lists for special interest mail-shots.

For example, did you know that every time you upload a photograph to FaceBook, within 2 seconds it is automatically processed by automatic face recognition software to identify who is in the picture … Except in certain European countries where this is against the law?

But there is also real mal-ware out there as well that will attempt to find the password of your mail account. Often it is just to hijack your account to be able to send spam in bulk. But if your main mail password is cracked, that could lead to more serious intrusions…

Probably many of don’t need to be given basic advice, but here are a few tips anyway:

    * Use disposable mail accounts for one-off on-line purchases and for on-line social networks.

    * Use non-memorable passwords that use all the characters on the keyboard and no real names or dates.

    * Have two computers / laptops / ipads. One for the social stuff on the web and one for serious stuff like your real-life friends, your work, your on-line banking.

    * Never download “free stuff” from the web onto your main laptop or ipad.

    * Never reply to unsolicited mail

    * Never tell anyone else your passwords (including your kids)

    * Install mal-ware detection software on your computer.

And if you really want to close all the doors and windows:

    * Use Linux or Mac instead of Windows as the operating system on your “main” machine (or even on all of them)

    Cheers,

(and if any spam-bots are reading this, you can reach me here: vororo 911 at gee-mail)

Journalists are writing …in the UK, but Gvt interfering,. The BBC is sadly no longer what it was ….

Here is a copy of the mail message that I sent to the BBC on 29/12/2015:

    Dear BBC,

This is a message for Fergus Walsh or anyone else in the Health & Medical Team who might be interested to take up this story.

I would like to draw your attention to the amazing story of Dr James Freeman, a rather special GP in Australia, who a few months ago launched “fixHepC” (http://fixhepc.com) – a “buyers club” for Hepatitis C sufferers that is rapidly becoming the only feasible source of treatment for many UK, european, and American patients.

Why might this make a news-worthy story? Here are some basic facts:

    * The hepatitis C virus has been called a “silent killer” because it can take many years for people to learn that they have the virus, and then many more years for serious life-threatening diseases such as cirrhosis or even liver cancer to develop. But even if these conditions do not ultimately develop, the effects of the virus can be devastating, with the principal symptom being fatigue.

    * Approximately 659 000 people in the UK have the hepatitis C virus, which is the principal cause of cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.

    * World-wide, it has been estimated that some 170 000 000 people have the disease. This makes hepatitis C a global health issue.

    * While very effective treatments now exist, the list price of “sofosbuvir”, manufactured by Gilead Sciences Inc., is a staggering $84 000 for 3 months of treatment. This makes it literally $1 000 per pill. Furthermore, sofosbuvir, should not be taken alone. It has to be used together with another drug such as daclatasvir or ledipasvir, which increases the cost even further.

    * In the UK, the cost of the same or similar drugs is breath-taking, costing from around £25 000 to £ 60 000, according to the latest NICE recommendations:

    https://www.nice.org.uk/news/press-and-media/nice-recommends-new-treatment-options-for-hepatitis-c

    * This means that at today’s prices, it would cost the UK between somewhere between £16 Billion and £39 Billion to treat everyone in the UK who has this disease.

    * Consequently, treatments in the UK have to be prioritised, and many people with the disease will have to wait until their condition becomes life-threatening. This means that even though a treatment now exists, many people still have to suffer the often devastating effects of the disease just because of the price. Similar cost-based restrictions in the USA and the rest of europe also apply.

    * Because of the extortionate cost of the American drugs, more and more people from the UK, the USA and the rest of europe are travelling to Australia to obtain a treatment.

    * The fixHepC buyers club is able to source quite legally for Australians the same treatment from generic suppliers in China at a total cost of between $1000 and $1600 for a full 3-months of treatment. This is nearly 1/100 of the American list price.

    * fixHepC is treating some 100 patients per week, and the numbers are rising rapidly.

    * The Australian government recently negotiated a deal with Gilead to provide *unlimited* access to all Australians to a hepatitis C treatment, regardless of the severity of their disease. But this will still cost Australia many thousands of dollars per person. Consequently, more and more people are still turning to the fixHepC buyers club for a treatment.

For more background information, I urge you look at the fixHepC “blog”

    http://fixhepc.com/blog.html

I also encourage you to look at some news and TV reports that have appeared recently in Australia:

According to this article, we each have about 32.7 Trillion cells in our bodies.

    http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/there-are-372-trillion-cells-in-your-body-4941473/?no-ist

Now, 32.7 trillion = 32.7 * 10^12. So if you are thinking about how much of an unwanted drug molecule you might want to have in your body, wouldn’t it be reasonable to say you’re pretty safe if you get down to less than about one molecule per cell?

Or in terms of moles, your pretty clean once you get down to about 6.023*10^23 / 3.27*10^13 = 2*10^-10 = 20 nano-moles?

Me, I’m pretty sure I’ve got nanomoles of all kinds of crap in my body, but it probably isn’t doing any harm (and I don’t believe in homeopathy).

So wouldn’t this be a “safe enough” point at which to break out the champagne and have an early night?

[… Just a thought, since getting pregnant is physically impossible for me as I am only a cartoon character… ;) ]
