A number of people have asked about how to make a charitable donation, and indeed some people have simply sponsored friends and strangers to have treatment.
To provide a transparent mechanism for this to happen we approached the Tasmanian Council on AIDS and Hepatitis Related Diseases (tasCAHRD) for help. We are deeply grateful that they have decided to extend the scope of the existing Andrew Shaw Foundation (ASF) to include not only provisioning for the needs of patients with HIV who are unable to afford medication, but also those with Hepatitis C.
Tonight tasCAHRD celebrated its 30th anniversary and the Andrew Shaw Foundation has been in existence for almost as long. The Foundation is a registered charity, so donations are tax deductible, and the long history of both tasCARD and ASF provide confidence that funds donated will be used efficiently with full audit and transparency.
Details about the Andrew Shaw Foundation can be found here.
The ASF details will be updated to include the expanded scope very shortly.
The way it will work is as follows:
Applications for assistance can be sent by any Australian doctor to tasCAHRD and should include financial need, an assessment of MELD score, the medications required (Sofosbuvir, Ledipasvir/Daclatasvir +/- Ribavirin) and a commitment to both monitor that patient’s treatment and provide a summary of the treatment results for audit.
Each week, according to funding availability, patients with the greatest need (MELD) will be allocated to treatment. Oversight of this will be provided by Gastroenterologists Dr Mark Wilson and Dr Steve Chung, who are both independent and expert in the field.
Standard testing procedures will be used to ensure that the generic medications provided to patients are fit for purpose.
If you would like to donate you can do so here:

This link has been updated to point to a dedicated donation portal specifically for HCV

30 November 2015 at 8:13 pm #4901This is a great initiative Dr James. All kudos to the Andrew Shaw Foundation for being willing to take us Hepatitis C’ers on board. I would imagine after 30 years they know what they’re doing and we just want to share some of what we are now lucky enough to have…opportunity.

30 November 2015 at 11:35 pm #4908That’s great news. Very worthy and necessary. I wonder if Helen Tyrell and the like will support this initiative.
1 December 2015 at 1:27 am #4919Also Dr I really think you should approach Micro finance charities for interest free loans It will reach a wider section, those that cannot afford the full cost up front but are able to repay the loan over a fixed time. People who are uncomfortable with full support will have an option. These micro finance companies are already cashed up. I have approached the Good Shephard, (who started this scheme)but haven’t received a reply. Maybe they think I am trying to scam them. Can’t you see what you can do? They can only refuse you eg its beyond our funding scope- we supply funding for necessities like white goods, car repairs etc
1 December 2015 at 2:57 am #4923A friend sent me this article from The Age this morning. Good points well made.
2 December 2015 at 11:11 am #5033So nice to play it forward and to know that your donation will make a real difference to someone’s life.

6 December 2015 at 1:50 pm #5316For the present time, I want my donations to be applied as per my post (below) in a previous thread –
In 2014 when the Govt approved simeprevir and declined sofosbuvir on “cost effectiveness” grounds – they immorally failed to overtly disclose that this decision effectively warehoused the most high risk patients who could not medically tolerate the simeprevir/IFN treatment – and were literally being left to die. For all the vanity this country projects about its benign social orientation – I still remain appalled that this fact is so overlooked and under-reported. Despite the public victim blaming – most informed citizens would not see this as the “australian” way.
I would be happy to contribute to a fighting fund to provide insufficiently resourced individuals who comprise this high risk group with treatment – I would like to know that on our watch we have tried to care for those in most need. There are clever people on this team whom can surely find a way to structure this without compromising our “existing” services. Doc James and his excellent team have created a compassionate and well executed social endeavour – I would like to see members honour its purpose in this way. Many of us aren’t personally well resourced but having found the funds to treat ourselves perhaps we can each dig a little deeper. Christmas might be a good time to juggle some priorities and seed the fund. It need not be ambitious but to have a little help on hand for those who can’t afford treatment seems a good caring of each other. ”But I found the “give now”, Shaw Foundation,TasCard and Aids/Hep overlays confusing – so I am not clear whether the funds I donate will go toward making generics available to HepC sufferers or not. I will assume they do – and just accept that I have again fallen victim to my usual intolerance for completion of forms of any kind.
So advanced with HepC my probability of success may be more compromised than general statistics suggest – but at least I was able to choose whether I throw the dice. I will never forget the horror, so recently, of having a life threatening disease with no hope of treatment due to big Pharma greed – it appals me how many people out there are experiencing such powerlessness.
DAMN. I have just read Doc James post – earlier I was just looking for anything titled “charity” or “donation” so I could post. Apologies for wasting your time – I failed to put FixhepC in “other”, and don’t know how to amend it. Will see if I can “contact” them tomorrow.
6 December 2015 at 3:40 pm #5320Yep its jut at the bottom of page, i’m sure if you email them they will amend it Archer.

6 December 2015 at 4:00 pm #5322Hi Archer,
As Paul says I’m sure if you contact them they’ll be happy to correct it.
I must admit I had to flick back and forth between their site and the instructions here to make sure I got it right. And then check that the total on the thermometer went up by the same amount just to be sure.
Perhaps one of the mods could insert a step by step walk-though with pics into this thread under the Doc’s post assuming the Andrew Shaw Foundation has no objections?

6 December 2015 at 4:35 pm #5327Hi Everyone
I’m a little confused also in the tasCAHRD documentation. I’m happy to provide support and donate some dollars to this wonderful initiative, however, I’m wanting to know my $$$s are going to HCV Treatment for needy people or person. Now there is a long list of where the funds go and that’s fair enough I guess, but are our funds discrete from within? So if 8K is raised we will be able to provide approximately 6 treatments to nominated hepers? Em
6 December 2015 at 5:11 pm #5328Hi Em,
I’ll try to walk you through process.
– click on the “givenow” link at the bottom of the Doc’s post.
– note $ thermometer showing how much we have donated so far and note that quantity.
– scroll to bottom of page and select one of the options. I chose “Give a one off donation online”
– enter quantity you want to donate. Scroll down and select the “my giving” option you want. I chose “Don’t use my giving”
– click “continue”
– complete personal details. Click “pay by credit card”
– click on “leave a message why donation is important to you”
– click “other”
– Type in “Fixhepc”
– click “continue”
– enter credit card details etc
– click, I think it was “make donation”
– go back to front page and check $ thermometer has gone up by amount of your donation.** if the increase was different from what you donated you won’t be able to tell whether yours went through or it was someone else so you better do it again.***

6 December 2015 at 5:25 pm #5331Umm, okay, just reread your post. The dollar thermometer seems to confirm what we donate. It matched the Doc’s numbers in his other post in this section about the amount donated in 24 hrs and then changed by the same amount I donated when I added mine.
I’m trusting that the Doc’s agreement with the foundation will be honoured and that all the funds which are nominated as “FixHepC” and shown in thermometer will be passed on for purchase of medication for most needy per MELD scores, etc.

6 December 2015 at 10:25 pm #5337Hmmm
I made a donation but didn’t take note of the $ thermometer (damn!) but pretty sure I had ‘fixHepC’ nominated correctly, so here’s hoping. The confirmation of donation email doesn’t stipulate where the money was directed, specifically.

There was a spot to put in why you were making a donation (if you wanted to fill it in) and I just said that I had been diagnosed with HepC and if I could assist someone to access the medication that would otherwise not be able to afford it, I was happy to make the donation. I hope it went to the right part….I did see the thermometer but didn’t take any notice of it after I made the donation.
