So an admin wanted to delete the original post by Jeff and leave the rest, but deleted the lot by mistake?
Sorry this seems unlikely, given most of the posts referred back to the original $15 post, so taking out the original would just remove a valuable reference point.
I think we should be told exactly what happened…whether it was related to Mike’s Texan joke, hehe, who did it etc, only a full disclosure will restore trust.

DEFINE(‘_POST_ABOUT_DELETE’, ‘NOTES:
-if you delete a Forum Thread (the first post in a thread) all children will be deleted as well!
..Consider blanking the post and poster’s name if only the contents should be removed..
– All children of a deleted normal post will be moved up 1 rank in the thread hierarchy.’;And here’s the link:
So if a mod didn’t know about this, it would be very easy to whack an entire thread accidentally…

Thanks for that, Vororo. Just wondering if there is a way to undelete the thread. It seems like a very odd feature to include.
In any case, just to provide some content to my worries about social reformers stifling debate that runs counter to their taste, here is a story about homosexual rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who was “no-platformed” by a UK National Union of Students officer for standing up for defending the free speech of people whose views he actually disagreed with. I don’t particularly admire the guy, but he is certainly taking a principled position here:
Peter-tatchell-snubbed-for defending-free-speech
It is a very strange day when defenders of minorities’ rights turn into oppressive Stalinists.
I don’t know about people here, but for my taste a strong opponent is someone I need to confront with an argument, not someone I attack personally for disagreeing with me. We’re supposed to be able to debate with each other, not spit on one another.
In any case, glad to hear it was a technical issue.

Over the last four or so months I have been a member and contributor to this site. During that time I have not witnessed any deliberate attempts to operate outside of the goals and values espoused in the attached post.
Something happened today and like the rest of you I’m not sure what or why. However, I have faith that the stated ideals will be adhered to and am comfortable with continuing my involvement here in the knowledge that we will be informed of whatever occurred if that can be determined and it is appropriate to do so.

20 February 2016 at 2:26 pm #12330This is what I know;
-Nobody intentionally deleted anything
-I was right in the middle of replying on the thread-I mean hitting letters on my phone then, BOOM, “access denied”
-The site was really acting up for me at that time, right before noon central time in the US.
-I have the ability to delete a post-
I probably caused this whole mess, but don’t see how, since I was at the tail of the thread, not the head.
I am simply going to write it up as a “glitch”
I was enjoying the back and forth. There was some fun being had, but nothing untoward, I was honestly hoping Jeff would get involved…..
Give an Arky Some grits, sow belly, cracklings, fried coon and a lively argument with a Texan and they are in Hawg Heaven.
Blame it all on me
Jeff, if you are reading this, come on back podna and chew the fat with us.

20 February 2016 at 3:01 pm #12333Hi All,

It was all, as expected in the trash.
I have restored the thread.

21 February 2016 at 12:59 am #12359His original post seemed out-of-place. I had a feeling about this guy and his ‘post’. I hope I’m wrong, but I’ve seen this before, countless times. Some people like to go to websites and misrepresent themselves, or start a false inquiry. It has the effect of getting all the regulars to be at each others’ throats. It can break up otherwise harmonious webpages. Like I said, I have previous experience with this.
I was at another website where someone did this exact same thing. I called him out, then the guy re-joined under another name. Pitting the regulars against me. It worked. The regulars didn’t like me anymore because I was ‘mean’ to this guy. I am very good at detecting bullshit, and also using syntax, common misspellings, the way people word stuff and keystroke errors to detect trends, patterns and anomalies. Anyway, I alerted the administrator who checked IP addresses, and sure enough, I was vindicated. However, the damage was done to the regulars at that website. Here we are going on 7 pages about this guy, and where is he? Thanks for listening. Jim

Thank you Dr. James21 February 2016 at 2:02 am #12361My view on where we should be here is much closer to fully free speech than censorship.
Spam is typically obvious and just gets deleted.
Then there is the more difficult area of “mis-information”, but with the rate of progress today’s “mis-information” could in fact be tomorrows factual reality. For example there was a post stating that NZ would be funding them. Now that has not happened yet, but I have heard that active negotiations are happening. At some point that information will become correct.
We have had a couple of really well credentialed and well informed people here “scared” off
To me that means if somebody posts something that does not pass the sniff test then a “measured” please explain response is a good way to call them out.
Of course in real life most Aussies apply a “no dick heads” policy and just raise our eyebrows, shrug our shoulders and move on.
YMMV
