Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCYes, re Bicarb, I wouldn’t use anything that reduces stomach acid FF – Remember things can be absorbed through the skin too and isn’t skin your largest organ?! Hot water opening pores etc? I would be cautious with that.
Have had to give up a few of my everyday things that usually help me, the worst one, being lots of good quality coffee in the morning! – HARD !

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCThere’s no doubt in my mind now that a lot of my teeth and gum problems and head congestion were caused by the virus.
Totally agree, my teeth & gums have improved on tx.
Re cold, what can I say ” I hear ya” ! I wish I had waited for warmer weather now, so I could get out and walk more. Thankfully it’s improved a little now, at least some sun! but still way too cold for me.

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCThanx, I tried all that, peppermint tea etc The 100% natural saline solution worked the best. like you would build up at night in my throat too, really, it was so strong ! I have no tonsils to stop it going lower. Walking / fresh air would help, but unfortunately I got this during the coldest spell here and was told to avoid cold air. Alot better now thankfully, can sense it , but negligible, but it lasted around 4 weeks or more.
ps I am usually a user of bicarb, but Couldn’t remember if I read somewhere if should avoid with meds? So avoid using it too much apart from other end of the day to meds ie bed time in toothpaste.

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCManky feeling right in the back of my throat/ sinuses that I can tell would evolve into an infection
I hear you FF Mine turned into a chest infection, (UK weather didn’t help, too cold to go out) took me weeks to get rid of it with anti-biotics unfortunately. It had an extremely strong chemical / woody earthy taste and I did wonder if I was regurgitating the Led at one point, it used to get worse around 4 hrs after taking my pill, then I read that Ledipasvir takes four – four 1/2 hrs to ‘reach its peak’ . So either it was ‘coming back up’, eliminating via sinus, nose ie gunk! or just ‘making itself known’ – I guess we’ll never know, but glad someone else has noticed this. Sinusitis is listed on Gilead’s Canadian sx list btw
ps there can also br an ‘allergic’ element to sinusitis as you probably know, Dr advised anti-histmamine that doesn’t interfere with meds, I took it opposite end of the day for a few days, helped finally clear it up along with a natural saline solution nose spray.

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCHi again Chejai – Thanks again for your very helpful message.
I am so very sorry to read (in other threads too) the symptoms you have been having to put up with and I do hope they ease for you soon ! It sounds like you have alot on your plate right now re moving etc Phew – Try not to overdo it and go at your own pace I say.
Do you know which week you went UND? I don’t blame you for extending if it improves your chances more for clearing. It’s a good idea to do this without a break from what I can gather, before those pesky mutants rear their ugly little heads and come back stronger. I am sure you have a very fine chance of SVR now, but we are all different and if it ups the % then go for it.
I am a strange one (!) in that I am going in the right direction but at a snails pace. There are concerns re Low absorption (digestive issues?) / Genetic RAVS and / or I am simply a slow responder! The problem is, how can we know which one? Pretty impossible really as not tested for resistance pre-tx , absorption has always been an issue with me, pre tx too, but we have never got to the bottom of it (pardon any pun!) and so, I find myself extending treatment after much consideration and advise from those who help me. Pretty fed up re length of treatment getting longer, it’s not so much that, but add on the 12 weeks EOT and summer will be over and autumn will be approaching, so a much longer ride on the roller-coaster !
This B12 /Absorption thing seems complex, I am considering and reading up on all advise, Yes dt has excellent advise there too and has really researched well.
the high MCV reading can indicate not just low B12 but low Folate”
It is not ‘that’ high, just a little raised, but what is interesting, is that it never was before and the last two bloods it has been.
It sounds to me, your face , eye, pain etc could be affecting a nerve? Nerve pain is just horrible – Poor you. You know Dan had nerve pain problems and tingling hands and feet and hasn’t yet got to the bottom of it.
I am also thinking of you and wishing you well from across the seas Chejai

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCHi Michael from a fellow 1a on Harvoni. From what I have read, we GT1as can be more inclined to be in the slow lane reaching UND.
I am getting in week 10 the Harvoni fatigue currently. For me, the first few weeks on tx I had amazing energy, felt so much better and had a ‘spring in my step’ – I felt great! Then I managed to pick up some bug and get a chest infection / sinusitis in month two, so this really slowed me down. Month three I have improved, the sinusitis dragged on for weeks. It’s hard to distinguish what was the bug and what is the sx. I am bright in the morning, but in the evening, I get very tired and can suddenly be overwhelmed with tiredness. I can literally ‘pass out’ in a matter of seconds. It is almost like an anesthetic effect it’s that quick! a novel experience for me as I have always taken a while to get to sleep previously. I wake up in the night with reading glasses still on, lights and TV on etc
These are powerful medicines and it would be strange if we did not feel some sx like this after taking them for a while. Maybe it’s the body’s reaction, making us rest so the meds can do their stuff. Really, there is little in the way of data as yet as these meds are still very new. It makes sense that a longer tx will cause a few more sx too.
Well done for getting this far, I will be extending to a longer treatment period too, got to make sure we do everything we can to rid ourselves of this, it is also a drain on our mental energy as well as physical, no wonder we get tired. My very best wishes for every success, looking good for you now as UND some weeks back
ps At what stage did you add the Riba?

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCHi Gaj, Sorry to read all you’ve been through and thank God you got treated. I think I’ve also had the virus a long time and instinct (along with Prof Dusheiko) told me I needed to treat soon for the exact reasons you mention. I believe the virus ramps up quite a bit when you reach age >50 too, I knew I was ‘on the turn’ at that point. This happened to an old friend, I fear we’re going to lose him as he wasn’t monitored at all. He was diagnosed Non Hep A /B years ago and had the odd check up, he was young then and in general good health & still drinking alcohol. His consultant eventually said “You obviously seem in good health, so I don’t need to see you any more” . Preventative is good! So glad you’ve been monitored well and nipped things in the bud. Without the virus attacking you, you can look forward to a brighter, healthier and happier future.
Hi Ariel, Yes I with interest Dr F’s post on out of date meds. Interesting, as here we are often reminded to keep an eye out for dates on meds, maybe they just want us to keep buying more?! I agree with Gaj though, I was going to write that it can cause a ‘loss of confidence” in patients when such details are missed, causing a delayed start of tx after psyching yourself up for it, unanswered calls to hospitals etc ; especially at a crucial time like starting tx and I see Gaj has used a very similar turn of phrase.
As my GP said to me “It’s important to have faith in those who treat us” … How understated yet perfectly put.

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCHow long is that drug on the market it seems strange its out of date so early considering they
only started using these drugs recentlyThey have been using the Abbvie for a while on ‘compassionate access’. My friend was treated with it some time ago. He was the one that was detected EOT, then VL rose to +51 post tx and they said he had failed. 3 months later he was clear.Thankfully. Point being the Abbvie was being used a while back (last year in this case) .

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCHI Ariel, yes, Geoff Dusheiko was my wonderful old consultant. Good old fashioned, hands on Dr who checked BP, heart rate, reflexes, eyes, hands, all bloods in detail (scribbling mathematical notes and equations etc) He was the head of the Royal Free for years and did awesome work – Loved him. Unfortunately, he wanted to semi retire and do part time, although still writing important medical papers on liver disease etc and lecture, speak at conferences etc – but the hospital didn’t want to pay out to keep such a knowledgeable prof on (from what I can gather) – The nurses told me they were all in tears when he left. He answered my emails personally after he left and recommended I get an USound scan when I had a strange heart-beat thing going on center abdomen just below ribs and ‘push for treatment’. He was replaced without warning by the blythe (to use dt’s perfect word) young Dr who totally upset me and refused to listen to anything, just lecture me on how there was no hope of tx in the near future and no more diagnostics and left me very frustrated and upset after our ‘consultation’ – So I changed hospitals as I had chosen that hospital because of the Prof being there. The lovely Prof Dusheiko emailed me and said how sorry he was that he wouldn’t be able to see me . He has written some excellent patient-centered articles which I have enjoyed over the time since being diagnosed. I believe he may be working PT at the other top London liver hospital Kings, but a not up to date re that currently. A great man and the Royal Free will not be the same without him.
LG xx

Thank-you Tim, Dr Debasis @ MonkMed & Dr Freeman @ Fix HepCYep, Feel for the guy, the response was dreadful – Harder for him as he was told he would get Harvoni, then when he went in for tx, they had changed it to VPak. After getting over that scenario, he went to get started on tx and now had this. Anxious times starting txt, but this is the way the NHS is going now and we are reading worrying reports more and more frequently of severe errors in care. What is really upsetting to patients, is their ‘don’t really care’ attitude when something goes wrong. All part of the plan by current Gvt to run the service down and into the hands of private companies. Patient care is out of the window apart from a few excellent hospitals who are individually pro-active in trying to retain that side of things. I know sometimes we UK members sound like alot of moaners, but unless you can experience it first hand, it’s hard to understand the stress and frustration it can cause.
I can only repeat to all UK NHS people – Check everything, get test results, check and keep on file and check the dates dates on your meds!
(edit) In fact, all patients everywhere check your meds & data etc !
