The Turnbull government will spend more than $1 billion to make breakthrough hepatitis C cures available to all as part of an ambitious new plan to eradicate the deadly disease within a generation.

Its happening how many people will they treat year by year ?

Geno1a 35years fibrosis 2 or 3 different results from different hospitals ??
24weeks mesochem sof/led as unsure of fibrosis status.
currently UND. No bad side effects
Have svr12 … waiting for svr 24
I now have SVR 36 weeks.

Hmmm – only a billion $? That means less than $5000 per patient.

Does that mean they didn’t deal with Gilead???

So many questions! Or does it mean they will only treat 11,111 people initially? Is this going to be over a long time? 1,000,000,000 / $90,000 = 11,111 ?

That’s marvellous news! And no mention of triaging patients. I was sure they would limit availability or stall some more. Still, I have no regrets on starting now.

No mention of Viekira Pak which is TGA approved and PBAC recommended. Said to held up because of pricing negotiations but I wonder if safety is also a concern as it is reportedly potentially lethal for patients with significant liver damage.

In the U.S., insurers reportedly pay $56,000 for a 12 week tx of Harvoni. Maybe the government of Oz ragged them down even lower. Do you have FOIs down there?
Might be interesting to see what price they got.

Maybe a deal with Gilead to take Sovaldi/Harvoni at lower prices like in Egypt. Or maybe generics?

Male, Fibro F1. Geno 1b. ALT 67 before treatment Viral load 5 million. My huge viral load replicates in my nervous system as I suffer anxiety.
Started Twinvir 12/12/15.

In the SMH it did quote Malcolm as saying “within a generation” to eradicate from the population. .. is that another way saying its going to take a while to treat everyone?

The cost of the medication was to decrease the more people treated. Gilead were assured of there profit and when they got it the price is reduced. So the price is on a downward scale not fixed per course of treatment. This is what I was told when they were negotiating earlier.

Just awesome news. All those gastros calling patients back in March April for treatment seem to have had a pretty good idea of the upcoming approval.

This is great news for Australians… And crucially, the article states:

“The move will make Australia one of the first countries in the world to publicly subsidise the drugs for their entire population, no matter what a patient’s condition is or how they contracted the disease.”

A quick calculation – let’s suppose the govt will pay Gilead 50 000 per patient: 230 000 * 50 000 = 11 500 000 000 (11.5 BIllion). Therefore, assuming a spend of 1 Billion per year, it will take 11.5 years.

Of course, not all of this money goes to Gilead, so add a few more years. And of course prices will come down so subtract a few years (and/or dollars).

Conclusion?

1. The Australian Govt will finally cover everyone who is really sick. Great News!!

2. Its reasonable to suppose there will be prioritisation of patients in the first few years, which is completely fair, given the cost.

3. For everyone else who wants treatment now, they will still need to look to generics, e.g. with fixHepC

But Wait A Minute!

Who wants to bet on whether the Australian Government will source from Gilead or from the generics?

If its from Gilead, guess what kind of “voluntary” anti-generic deal Gilead will try to slip in ???

Oh, shit… Now is the time for everyone in Australia to do some very heavy lobbying !!! .

Until everyone who is sick and wants to be treated sooner rather than later, can access treatment, the Buyer’s Club is THE place. A billion dollars is a start and a great thing.
It is still just a start.
