This is a perfectly good reason to do the test.
One question that gets forgotten in medicine is this:
“What do you think it could be?”
I wasn’t taught to ask this in medical school, it was a bit of wisdom from a skilled clinician. The significance is that if I don’t ask that question, and treat that concern I might get the diagnosis 100% correct, and the treatment 100% correct, but have failed to address the real concern that brought the patient to my door.
YMMV
19 August 2016 at 6:22 am #22328This week I have achieved more than in four years since the old tx and I am so grateful to FHC.
That is so awesome to hear because I and many others feel the same way.
Even my short UND, I can think clear, feel energy and know FHC is responsible.

Hep C RNA NOT DETECTED”20 August 2016 at 3:31 am #22368Well I’m SVR 16 and I feel like I am 20 again, I just don’t look it (55, and a few grey hairs) I feel so good, I will be shocked if I relapse. With these new Sofosbuvir combination treatments, it is a medical breakthrough comparable to the Polio vaccine. Dr. Freeman has said, SVR 12 is 99% and SVR 24 is 99.9%. So get checked at 12, 24 & 52 weeks. After one year, you are officially cured, I have never seen anything indicating a relapse after 52 weeks.
20 August 2016 at 5:13 am #22373GF … I hear you brother ! This medicine is like a miracle so far, I’ve never felt so good in three decades ! Awesome post & stay well.
In good health my friend.

With the proviso that your ALT was elevated out of range pre treatment (a handful of patients with a significant VL have normal looking LFTs at baseline) then ALT elevation is a reliable marker for relapse. Elevations of LFTs for no obvious reason are the usual reason doctors look for HCV.
So, at SVR24, if your ALT is normal, and you’re not feeling any of the “usual suspect pre-treatment symptoms” then HCV RNA PCR is largely academic – we are not going to find anything. My reason for ordering it would be to remove patient doubt/anxiety, rather than because it’s strictly needed and I’m not already sure what the result is.
Thanks, Doctor.
That makes sense. I’m not overly concerned, especially as the stats for SVR12 are so well established, but out of curiosity, I might request some LFTs the next time I see my GP. This is a long-term process, so a little more information can’t hurt, especially if it is quick and not too draining on the public purse.

Thank you to Gilead, Michael Sofia, and the terrific folk at FixHepC for making this adventure possible.

LFTs are an inexpensive ‘out of pocket’ test.
Weighing one’s health against public largess is usually a no win equation.
