Why ALT Range differs for different Labs

Hi Friends,

At the EOT my ALT was 17 (range 0-55)

Today after 6 weeks in a routine control the ALT was 26 (range 16-63)

My alt is higher due to a diffrent range from the Lab?

I plan to do the Viral Load at 24 weeks SVR 24 since they are very expensive here.

Hi Enkel,

How are you feeling now you are at 6 weeks EOT?

For your ALT result, possibly the different test/range caused it or maybe other variables as the result will vary a bit from time to time anyway. Dr James explains in this thread.

Yes what Gaj said, my GP told me a while ago the ALT AST will wobble around a bit just watch it stays in range. Hope you are doing well good to hear from you

Hi Enkel,
Yeah mine always wobbles (my ALT and AST too illy:' /> )
No discernible reason, I’ve been told that’s normal an the important thing is the fibroscan reading

Genotype 1a
Diagnosed in 2004, had HCV for all my adult life. Until 2016!!!!
Harvoni treatment, started 19 March 2016
4 week results Bilirubin 12 down from 14 pre treatment,
Gamma 25 down from 52, ALT 19 down from 63, AST 19 down from 47,
VL <15 down from a lazy 6 million or so

EOT Results
Bilirubin 10, GGT 18, ALT 19, AST 21, VL UND

12 Weeks post EOT
Bilirubin 11, GGT 16, ALT 22, AST 20, VL UND

Hi Enkel, my comrade with Twinvir & GT 1b,

How are you feeling? Time pass so quickly…I am now 7 weeks post EOT and you are only 6 days behind me.
My GI told me that the ALT/AST variations within normal range are not significant.

I wish you all the best! And SVR24 in summer time, at least for me, August isn’t it?

HCV since I don’t know. Diagnosed in 2010.
GT1b, F0/F1, VL 9M, ALT 44, AST 42, Tx naive,
started 12 wks Twinvir on 06.12.2015. Feeling great and grateful 🙂

Different labs, even different labs within the same franchise, often use different tests, instruments, and laboratory personnel and each can introduce a small amount of variability. Most labs though have a fairly reliable degree of accuracy and precision. For accuracy, consider a dart board with a dart in the centre. For precision over a number of tests using the same sample think of a dart board with a cluster of darts on the board but not necessarily in the centre. What you would prefer obviously is that a test(s) was both 100% accurate and precise, clustered darts in the centre, but it just isn’t possible. Lab results tend to be accurate and precise enough, especially if you use the same lab all the time. If they weren’t, pathology labs would lose accreditation. With most results, the important thing usually is how they change over time rather than the actual numbers themselves.

So, different labs have different ranges because they’ve factored in their equipment and their methodology, the equipment they do tests with and how they do it.

Was geno 1b since 1973. SVR January 2015 (V-Pak)
Survivor primary HCC, in remission NHL (MZL)
Compensated cirrhosis. Hoping for some regression…

I measured again the ALT at 15 weeks EOT and it is 10.5 (0-55), lower than 7 weeks EOT!
