These medicines are for ridding the body of the virus, but I guess they don’t cure the damage and digestive issues caused by it overnight, so if there was liver damage previously, it will still be there, albeit with less inflammation ? Time has shown an improvement in many patients from what I have read. My liver has improved quite a bit on the medicines. (I am still on treatment, so we shall see after it ends).

I also still get this discomfort on the lower right hand side as many have described above. I went for the amazing new LiverMultiScan and strangely, that area was the clearest part of my liver regarding fibrosis ! I have read the lower ribs cage can become inflamed, gallbladders can also cause problems. When you see your liver on the LiverMultiScan it makes your realise just how large and important the liver is – I was shocked at the size of mine, it is huge and goes right around to the left side too ! it makes sense to me now, that if the liver is unhappy, then nearly everything else will be.

Who knows what it is, maybe something in the ‘piping’ ? ;-) It would be very interesting to know !

For me now its nearly all the time since the last 4 days. Its from the right side just below the liver right till the back. Its not sharp just strong dull pain, more like a swelling. Feels like a sprain or muscle twist. Hoping it goes away. But it was gone on treatment but now back. Crap!

    Hi darbara,

I also have some pain in that area which comes and goes, I liken it to a mild “stitch” that you would normally get from exercise. I have discussed it with my Hepatologist but he hasn’t been able to find anything obvious to explain it via physical and blood tests or scans.

Only you can tell how much the pain has increased in intensity and/or frequency in the last few days. Consider that it may be HCV related or possibly a sign of something else but if the increase is marked then seeking medical advice to determine whether it is important would seem to be prudent if only to give peace of mind.

I also had pains just below the liver before tx, and it was stomach related. Diagnosis was helicobacter pylori, which I eradicated with antibiotics therapy. After DAA tx I’m again getting my stomach upset with lost of gasses and sometimes pain, so if it not stop soon, I will again run some stomach tests.
As I understood liver don’t hurt, the only pain in liver can come from gallbladder issues.

    Hi
I’m F0 and went in with a very low VL (240,000ish)
I have had exactly what Gaj described
    It went away.
I’m around 7 or 8 weeks past EOT not sure exactly
My pain was like a sharp stitch
I didn’t worry about it just asked my GP and talked to a friend for peace of mind
I got SVR 4 regardless of the pain stabs
    And yes they’ve gone.

I’ve had the mild to moderate sharpish pain around lower right ribcage as well, both during and particularly post-treatment. But not for a few weeks now – I’m about 8 weeks post treatment with SVR5. Doesn’t seem like anything to worry about B)

    Hi Darbara

I can certainly relate to those pains: I’ve had them for years in my liver. When I speak to doctors they say that the liver has no nerve endings in it so it can’t feel pain, but the surrounding capsule does have nerves and it gets irritated when the liver is swollen.

But regardless of what the science says the pains I get are so specific and described by other HCV sufferers so they must be coming from the liver. I get 3 types of pain, all below the right rib cage…

    – occasional dull ache/stitch lasting a few seconds-minutes
    – very occasional short darts of pain/twinges
    – occasional burning sensation lasting few minutes

As others have mentioned your pre-treatment liver damage will take time to heal. I hope the sub-text isn’t that you worry that you have relapsed…hold tight and wait for the EOT +12 VL; and you know the odds are hugely stacked in your favour.

I’m still on treatment and got these pains much more at the beginning of treatment than usual…I re-framed them as my liver healing rather than something to worry about.

I have had them for over 2 years BUT there are times when its gone for a few months. A month into treatment and I had nothing. 2 months after treatment its back again. I dont fear relapse as there is enough treatments out there. Ive done myself a favour by stoping booze for the last 12 years or so, thats helped me I am sure of it.

Perhaps not too much related with the purpose of this thread, but here is a tip that works every time in my case when I have this liver discomfort: I chew a small piece of fresh ginger (15-20 grams) and afterwards I drink a glass of water. It is spicy, but you don’t have to swallow the fiber part of the ginger, the juice you can get from it makes wonders. In my case, the discomfort goes away in couple of minutes.

Some caution needs to be taken into account if one takes pills to decrease blood pressure

    I HATE ginger … with a passion.

But, found it to work exactly as you described.

For the Aussies here, I used “Buderim Crystallised Ginger” … it’s not too hot … but works.

I viewed it as medicine … I haven’t tasted any sort of medicine that has tasted good.

GT2 I hate to tell you but when you eat crystallised ginger you may as well be eating lollies (candy to you, American friends)
Have you tried a hot drink of ginger and fresh mint with hot water poured over it?

If you like juice apple, carrot, celery and ginger (about 1 inch of root) is not a bad drop.
